VHC®
COUNTER Material
VHC® is a new generation of counter material developed primarily for use in athletic, sport, and work shoes. The material’s base fabric has continuous fibers; the counters are made with an exclusive resin and Z-coated on both sides for bonding.

Patterns:
Insert counter patterns should incorporate a slash or V-notch, and should provide enough spring to allow the counter to be easily inserted (and to conform to the back curve of the upper).
Cutting:
Cut selvage to selvage (long dimension of die parallel to material width). VHC® materials can be multiple-ply-cut depending on the type of equipment used.
Fitting Room:
Skiving of the counter wing ends and/or top edge may be necessary to prevent X-ray. It can be done on a drum skiver fitted with a knurled feed roll and (preferably) a powered roller top foot. For best results, lubricate drum with soapy water. Under certain conditions, it may help to apply counter to quarter (foxing) prior to upper assembly. This can be achieved by spot-activating or spot-cementing counter to foxing.
Activation:
Minimum bond-line temperature 75°C.
VHC® materials used in foam-back-lined athletic footwear can be activated via a hot air system (prior to cold molding). This procedure prevents destruction of the lining foam cells and stops adhesive from bleeding through lightweight synthetic materials. (Ask your Stanbee representative for details.)
Lasting:
VHC® materials are designed for back-part on-the-last molding, or hot/cold off-the-last forming. Two-way activators (heated male/female molds) tend to activate at lower temperature and dwell-time settings.
Fabric:
A durable, non-woven polyester designed to withstand tears and the pressures of lasting.
Saturation:
A proprietary thermoplastic resin that’s firm and durable with superior molding characteristics.
Thermo Coating:
VHC are Z-coated with a thermoplastic adhesive formulated to bond to a wide range of materials at lower temperatures.
